Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise
New research indicates that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become ravenous," described one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
